Yorkshire Wensleydale Scoops Gold and Three Silvers in World Cheese Awards

Cheeses from the Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes have won four major accolades at the World Cheese Awards.

Three awards were given to the Creamery's most famous product, Real Yorkshire Wensleydale, while a fourth went to Kit Calvert Old Fashioned Wensleydale, a handcrafted, creamy, buttery textured cheese, named after the local businessman who rescued the dairy from closure in 1935.

In the Wensleydale category, Real Yorkshire Wensleydale won a gold and two silvers.  Kit Calvert Old Fashioned Wensleydale won silver in the Specialist Cheesemakers' Association (SCA) category's section, which is only open to SCA members.

Judged and announced at the Birmingham NEC, as part of the BBC Good Food Show, the World Cheese Awards attract judges from all over the globe, which include leading cheese buyers, retail experts and internationally renowned chefs.

David Hartley, Managing Director of the Wensleydale Creamery and a 2010 personal winner of the World Cheese Award for Exceptional Contribution to Cheese, said: "To win four World Cheese Awards is a fantastic achievement and a global recognition of our core product, Real Yorkshire Wensleydale, as well as our Kit Calvert Old Fashioned Wensleydale.

"Scooping three awards in the Wensleydale category shows that the real home of Wensleydale cheese is still right here in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

"We are very proud of these awards, but most of all we are, as always, proud of the cheese we produce, making these accolades even more gratifying."
