Jul 29, 2011
The Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, has struck with triple gold, silver and bronze medals at one of the most prestigious shows in the cheese makers’ calendar.
The Wensleydale Creamery won nine medals and two highly commended awards for its cheeses at the International Cheese Awards at Nantwich.
Notable accolades comprised of two gold, two silver and two bronze medals for Real Yorkshire and a silver medal for Kit Calvert Wensleydale. In the Crumbly cheese class Real Yorkshire Wensleydale took gold, silver and bronze. Real Yorkshire Wensleydale & Cranberries and Real Yorkshire Wensleydale & Ginger were both highly commended.
In addition, Morrison’s The Best Yorkshire Wensleydale and Asda Extra Special Yorkshire Wensleydale, both produced by The Wensleydale Creamery, took bronze medals.
The medals follow on from a successful Great Yorkshire Show, which saw The Wensleydale Creamery winning nine awards and two ‘best in show’ trophies for a variety of its cheeses and a haul of two gold and one bronze award at the Cheshire Show.
David Hartley, The Wensleydale Creamery’s managing director, said: “These medals demonstrate the excellence of The Wensleydale Creamery’s cheeses.
“The International Cheese Awards at Nantwich are judged by cheese experts. To receive such recognition for the quality and taste of our products at one of the cheese world's most prestigious events means a lot to everyone at The Wensleydale Creamery.
“This has been a fantastic year so far for us, which is testament to the quality of our products and the hard work and skills of our master cheese makers.
“Our milk is supplied by a network of more than 40 local family-run farms where cows graze the limestone meadows of Wensleydale – this all helps give our Real Yorkshire Wensleydale its unique and special taste. It is very satisfying to have this acknowledged.”
